Departments are used throughout many modules in the IT Assets Management Database / CMDB. Employees, Workstations, Servers, Purchases all depend on departments, to just mention a few.
The department number comes especially in handy when using the purchasing module, so you can prep your purchase and just copy out the department number so you can use it in your ERP.
Other Parameter is and additional field that was introduced so you can use it for a different purpose, e.g., a specific LDAP Active Directory group name for a Checklist PowerShell script. It is a variable field that you can use for advanced functionality, or whichever purpose you like.
